The Republic of Moldova's relations with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), is a specialized agency of the United Nations, was established as an international multilateral financial institution in 1977 as one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference. IFAD is dedicated to eliminating hunger and rural poverty in developping countries.
Since 1999, IFAD has invested a total of 120 mln.USD in seven important projects and programs in Moldova, benefiting more than 135000 households. Republic of Moldova ranks among the top ten countries of the efficiency of implementing FIDA projects out of the 113 beneficiares.
In Moldova, IFAD loans support the development of links between agricultural producers, markets and suppliers. IFAD tries to improve the access of rural population to well needed financial services, develop market intermediaries, and enhance the availability of advice to financial institutions and businesses.
In September 2018, the IFAD Executive Council approved the Program of Strategic Opportunities for the Republic of Moldova for the period 2019-2024 (COSOP), which provides financing of investment projects in agriculture, focusing on innovations, young people's involvement, increased resistance to climate change, reducing poverty in rural areas.
COSOP Programme has two strategic objectives: 1. establishing pro-poor market links to help the development of value chains, thereby enabling the rural poor to raise their incomes; and 2. promoting access to rural financial services, with a particular emphasis on products that support the poorest and most vulnerable groups in rural areas.
